Advice column: How to study for Finals?
Finals are coming up, and I know it can be a stressful time, but don’t worry – I’ve got some tips to help you prepare without the last-minute panic. One helpful strategy is taking advantage of the cheat sheet – many teachers allow you to bring a one-page cheat sheet during the exam. If your teacher doesn’t provide one, you can create your own! I like to format mine horizontally so I have more space to work with, and I recommend downloading your cheat sheet as a PDF. From there, you can easily upload it to Quizlet to automatically create study sets and flashcards, which is super helpful for review.
While I personally don’t have math exams, I still use cheat sheets for my other subjects. For me, I focus on bolding key answers or definitions, highlighting important sections, and using diagrams instead of just words. Diagrams help me visualize the concepts better and take up less space than written explanations. When I create my cheat sheet, I make sure to use every inch of space available to fit as much important info as possible.
Once the test starts, your cheat sheet will be your best friend! You can refer to it quickly for key terms or definitions without having to waste time flipping through notes. I’ve included an example of my cheat sheet below so you can get an idea of how I format mine- see here
Hopefully, this gives you a good starting point to create your own effective cheat sheet for finals!
And here's one last tip: when you’re taking the test, always bring a drink with you. It’s quiet, and having a drink nearby can actually help you relax. If you feel yourself getting stressed, move the cup in small circles on your desk, like a coffee cup, and it’ll help relieve some of that tension. This is something I personally do, and it helps me stay calm and focused.
