scholarships, internship and paid opportunities Reminder: This newsletter is best viewed by clicking 'Read Online' in the top right corner.

Hi! It's the start of a new semester! Hopefully, everyone is already settled into their classes. For those college students who just came back yesterday— we can do it! I came back too. I’m currently a college senior and a commuter, so for the longest time, I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO come back, but here we are! We gotta finish strong.

I have some amazing news for you guys! We are launching our own scholarship with Essayer! Unlike the national essay competition, this scholarship will not require any payment. It will be open to any undergraduate woman or woman of color! It will launch on January 30th, and the due date is March 30th! More on the next newsletter! The prompt will be the same as the national essay competition, so if you are currently a community college student planning to transfer, you can apply to both!

How to Cold Reach Effectively

I’ve been cold reaching out since high school, and it’s been an incredible journey of learning and connecting. One of my earliest experiences was when I got really interested in real estate. I found a real estate agent through the Nextdoor app and reached out to her, sharing my interest in becoming a realtor. After a few conversations, she hired me as her assistant! It was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the industry.

Although I didn’t stay in real estate, the connection I built and the skills I gained were invaluable. I learned how to create websites, manage email marketing, and do cold outreach—all of which I now use for Girls on Campus. These experiences taught me a lot about reaching out effectively, and I’d love to share some tips with you.

First, find a common connection. People are more likely to respond when they see something familiar or shared between you. Whether it’s being from the same industry, sharing a cultural background, or having similar experiences, these commonalities create an instant rapport. For instance, I often reach out to other Latino professionals, especially those who are immigrants or bilingual, because we already have that shared understanding.

Next, do your homework. Before reaching out, take some time to research the person. Check out their LinkedIn profile or business website to learn about their current role, past projects, and what they’re passionate about. This information helps you personalize your message, showing that you’re genuinely interested in them and not just what they can offer you.

When you write your message, make sure to be clear and concise. Introduce yourself, explain why you’re reaching out, and include a specific call to action. For example, you could ask for a short meeting to discuss their work or for advice on a particular topic. Avoid vague endings like “great to meet you” without giving them a next step.

Also, remember to follow up respectfully. People are busy, and it’s easy for messages to get lost in the shuffle. If you don’t hear back, wait a week before sending a polite follow-up. Keep it short and to the point, reminding them of your previous message.

Here’s what I try to do to make my outreach even more effective:

  • Always introduce yourself: Let them know who you are. A personal touch goes a long way, and it helps them remember you.

  • Explain your reason for contacting them: Be clear about why you’re reaching out. It makes it easier for them to understand if they can help.

  • Include a call to action: Give them something to respond to, like setting up a meeting or sharing their contact info.

  • Create an email signature: If you’re emailing, include links to your LinkedIn, portfolio, and maybe a picture. It helps you stand out.

  • Send messages at reasonable times: For work emails, stick to business hours. On LinkedIn, reach out when people are likely to be active, usually in the evening.

  • Avoid generic phrases: Instead of starting with “I hope you’re doing well,” try something more engaging. Mention something specific about their work or a post they made.

These tips have worked well for me, and I hope they help you too. Building connections takes effort, but with the right approach, you can create opportunities and learn a lot from others. If you would like to connect with me pls do so here.
