ᰔ Hi girlies! New opportunities for college and high school!

The newsletter for the girlies with college and career advice!

ᰔ ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ Hi girlies!

I’m sooo nervous. I recently shared (like 3 newsletters ago) that I graduated from college in May 2025, and this summer I’m finally starting my big girl job. I officially start this Monday — ughhh I’m nervous but excited!

The good thing is, the company I’ll be working for (which is a big bank) is flying me out to NYC for 3 weeks for training!! I’ll be there — yay! I know other accounting and finance companies like Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and Accenture also fly out interns or early grads to train them in a new city, which I think is so cool and a big plus to look out for.

Right now, I’m in finance and starting my first role at a major bank. While a 9 to 5 isn’t my dream job, I’m genuinely so proud to be starting here — especially with the job market being so tough.

If you’re in a similar situation or currently applying to internships or jobs, I highly encourage you to not only look at companies you love, but also focus on which ones are investing in you — with training, benefits, or relocation. The beginning is often the hardest, so set yourself up where you can learn and grow.

Tbh, my dream company has always been Sephora, but the pay wasn’t great — so I decided to go where I could build a strong foundation first. I know I won’t be in finance forever, but this is a stepping stone I’m proud of, especially as a first-gen grad. 💼✨

Wish me luck for Monday!! And if you're in NYC sometime during those 3 weeks, let’s meet up!

How to Adapt Your Resume for Small Businesses vs Big Companies — for High School & College Students

If you’re applying to internships or jobs this year, one of the best things you can do is adapt your resume depending on where you’re applying. A small local business? A major corporation? A nonprofit? Each of these will look at your application through a different lens. And if you’re a high school or college student, the way you present your experience also matters — especially if you're still building that “traditional” resume.

Here’s what I’ve learned (and what I wish someone had told me sooner):

For Small Businesses & Nonprofits

These are usually tight-knit teams where personality, initiative, and passion matter more than having the perfect experience.

Think of places like:

  •  Flawless by K, Botanical Babe Skincare (small brands that value creativity)

  • Your local café or bakery

  • A lash tech, stylist, or esthetician looking for digital help

  • Nonprofits like GENZ for Change, Sad Girls Club, or She’s the First

What they care about:

  • Do you show initiative, even if you’re new?

  • Can they trust you to represent their mission or brand?

  • Can they count on you to show up and contribute?

If you’re in high school or early college, highlight things like:

  • Projects you started on your own (a club, a passion project, a small shop)

  • Volunteer work or community involvement

  • Soft skills like creativity, communication, and flexibility

✨ Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to show your personality. A small biz might love that you run a dog-walking service or that you made graphics for your school club’s Instagram.

🪸 For Big Companies & Corporations

These orgs usually use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) — software that filters resumes based on format and keywords.

Think of places like:

  • Microsoft, Deloitte, EY, Google, LinkedIn

  •  L’Oréal, Rare Beauty, Estée Lauder, Sephora

  •  Meta, TikTok, Amazon, Salesforce

What they look for:

  • A polished, one-page resume with clear structure

  • Action verbs and job-specific keywords

  • Measurable achievements (“Increased engagement by 30%...”)

  • Tip: Even if you’ve never worked in a big company, highlight leadership, team projects, or analytics from a school club or org. Think: “Designed Canva graphics for club account — grew reach by 400 views/week.

But here’s the catch — not all roles at the same company are the same.

Let’s say you're applying to Sephora:

  • 💄 If you’re applying to a Beauty Advisor position in-store, your resume should focus on customer service, product knowledge, and sales experience. A warm tone and people-first skills will go a long way.

  • 💻 If you’re applying to a Marketing Internship at Sephora HQ, your resume should highlight analytics, branding projects, digital strategy, and relevant coursework. It should feel polished, data-informed, and aligned with Sephora's digital presence.

What About High School Resumes? And Fly-In Programs?

If you’re a high school student — especially a sophomore or junior — having a resume might seem too early, but here’s the truth: It’s one of the most useful tools to have ready.

Scholarships, summer programs, and honors classes may ask what you’ve done outside school — a resume makes it easy to show this.

Programs like Columbia STARS, Tufts Voices, and Dartmouth Bound want to know:

  • What drives you?

  • How do you lead in your community or school?

  • How might you grow at their school?

✨ A resume doesn’t just help you get the job — it helps you see how far you’ve already come.
