Why remote learning opportunities (paid or unpaid) matter!!!

Advice Column 💌
I usually don’t advocate for unpaid opportunities, especially when they’re labeled as internships and are in-person. If you're expected to commute, work consistent hours, or contribute real value to a company, you should be paid. Period. But I’ve learned that not all unpaid experiences are created equal — especially when it comes to remote learning opportunities.
Sometimes, an unpaid remote role can be worth considering if it offers real value in return like mentorship, hands-on experience, or access to a network you wouldn’t otherwise have. I've personally found global opportunities this way, and they helped me explore fields I was curious about without the pressure of long-term commitment. Remote options are usually more flexible, and many are short-term or project-based, making them easier to balance with school or work.
If you're looking to find these opportunities, try using keywords like
remote research assistant, virtual fellowship, student consultant, or online learning cohort.
I also recommend cold emailing researchers, startup founders, or nonprofit leaders whose work you admire — it’s one of the most underrated ways to find real opportunities. Many of them are open to mentoring students or bringing someone on to help with a project, especially if you’re proactive and respectful.
You can say something like:
Subject: Student Interested in Your Work — Open to Supporting Any Projects
Hi [Name],
My name is [Your Name], and I’m a student studying [Your Major] with a strong interest in [mention their focus area — e.g., educational equity, social impact, public health, etc.]. I recently came across your work on [specific project, article, or role] and was really inspired by the impact you’re making.
I’m currently looking to get more hands-on experience in this space — particularly with [research/policy/program development/advocacy/etc.]. If you’re working on any projects where you could use support (even on a volunteer or learning basis), I’d be honored to contribute and learn from your work.
Thank you so much for your time, and either way, I’ll definitely keep following your work.
Warmly,
[Your Name]
[LinkedIn or Website, if you have one]
The key is to evaluate whether the opportunity gives you more than it takes. Does it help you grow skills, build a portfolio, or get closer to your career goals? Is there structure, guidance, or a clear timeline? If the answer is yes, it might be worth your time — even if it’s unpaid.
But if you’re being treated like free labor, or the work feels exploitative or directionless, it’s okay to walk away. Your time and energy are valuable. Unpaid doesn’t always mean worthless — but you deserve to be selective, strategic, and always clear on what you’re getting in return.
Here are some opportunities for high school and college studentsʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ
