ᰔ Hi girlies! 💞 Opportunities to lock in before summer break!
The newsletter for the girlies with college and career advice!

ᰔ ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ Hi girlies!
Girls… I just graduated from university 🎓💖 It still doesn’t feel real. Everything happened so fast. I started Girls on Campus during my junior year, so it’s been about a year and a half, almost two years, and now I’m officially a college graduate 🥹🌸
There were so many moments when I wanted to drop out or stop trying. I struggled with motivation, especially when things felt overwhelming. If you’re in that place right now, please know it’s okay 💗 You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep going.
And when it comes to grades, they really don’t define you. You just need to do enough to get through. I remember taking a full week off because I couldn’t keep going anymore. My grades dropped a little, but I was able to recover and actually came back stronger . Sometimes rest is exactly what you need to move forward.
Just a few days ago, I had a moment of panic. I was anxious and overthinking everything, even convinced I might not graduate 😣 But those thoughts are normal, and they pass.
If no one has told you today, I’m proud of you 💕 Keep showing up for yourself. You are doing better than you think 🌷

plus tips for scholarships essays!

Advice Column 💌
We officially have our winner for the She Leads Scholarship! 🎉
I wanted to share some reflections from the review process, especially for anyone currently applying to scholarships or planning to in the future. It’s kind of surreal—I went from submitting my own essays to now reviewing them! I did have support from a nonprofit called Sí Se Puede, but I was still able to contribute my own input and perspective as we picked the final winner.
The prompt was:
"Discuss the significant challenges faced by women of color pursuing higher education and outline your plans to address and overcome these challenges (this will show any leadership qualities/merit)."
Here are a few things I learned that might help you stand out when writing your own essay:
Avoid starting with the same line everyone uses.
Over 90% of the essays I read began with some version of “The challenges women of color face…” or “As a woman of color, I’ve experienced…” While there’s nothing wrong with this, it gets very repetitive when you’re reading 50+ essays. The winning essay started with something personal and unique—it immediately pulled me in and made me want to keep reading. So instead of rephrasing the prompt, try starting with a specific story, moment, or feeling.Write as much as the word count allows (if you can).
Some essays were really short, and I felt like I didn’t get to know the applicant well. If the application gives you space to share more—use it. This is your chance to tell your story and show who you are beyond just stats or awards.Don’t just talk about the problem—show how you’ll overcome it.
Yes, the prompt asks about the challenges you’ve faced, but it also asks how you plan to overcome them. You don’t need a perfect, step-by-step plan, but we do want to see that you’ve thought about your path forward. A lot of essays focused only on the struggles, and some even came across as angry or bitter. While your emotions are valid, make sure to balance them with hope, growth, or action.Watch your tone.
Be mindful of how your writing might come across. As reviewers, we don’t know you personally, so the way you write is how we form impressions. A few essays made it sound like the writer just wanted funding to fix everything, rather than showing us why they are the one to invest in. Use your voice to show strength, initiative, and vision—not just frustration.
If you're currently writing or revising a scholarship essay, I hope this helps. You have a story worth telling—just make sure it’s clear, thoughtful, and uniquely you. 💖
