Advice Column 💌

I think we never realized how many eyes were actually on me.

You work quietly, day by day, building something with heart and purpose—and then one day, you’re reminded that people are watching. Not always in a bad way, but in a way that brings perspective. And sometimes, assumptions.

Recently, someone reached out to say they felt my work was too similar to theirs. It wasn’t harsh, but it did catch me off guard. Because behind the scenes, I know how much time, energy, and care I put into every detail. I know the late nights, the cold emails, the deep research. But not everyone sees that. Most people only see the result—and from their own point of view.

This isn’t to expose anyone. It’s not about blame. I’m sharing this because I don’t want anyone else to feel caught off guard the way I did. Especially if you’re a student, intern, or early in your career. It’s easy to feel small when your work is questioned—but you don’t have to shrink.

What matters most is how you choose to respond. That’s where your power is.

If something like this ever happens to you, here’s what I hope you’ll remember:

First, take a pause. Don’t rush to defend or explain. Sit with what was said and ask yourself what you want to stand for.

If you respond, be kind and clear. You don’t need to over-explain. A simple message can go a long way:

“Thank you for sharing how you feel. I want to be respectful and transparent. Everything I’ve created is rooted in my own process, and I’ll continue to stay mindful moving forward.”

You don’t have to be defensive to stand your ground. You just have to be steady.

And always, always keep track of your work. Save drafts, write down timelines, and document your progress. Whether you’re in business, a group project, or an internship, this kind of care protects you more than you realize.

If you’re unsure how to respond, talk to someone you trust. A mentor, a friend, a peer. Sometimes you just need a second voice to remind you of what you already know—you didn’t get here by accident.

If something like this happens in a job or internship, I’d recommend documenting the situation clearly—what was said, when it was said, and how you responded. Keep things respectful, and if it feels serious or impacts your work, bring it up with your manager in a calm, clear way. You can say something like:

“I wanted to flag a situation that came up, just so there’s transparency. I’m proud of the work I’ve done, but I also want to make sure I’m aligned with the team and that any concerns are addressed professionally.”

Having these conversations early—before things escalate—shows maturity and protects your reputation. You're not just defending yourself, you're creating space for resolution.

Whether you're working for someone else or building your own thing, the goal is the same: to lead with integrity, clarity, and confidence.

So if you ever find yourself in a similar moment, remember this:

You can be graceful and firm at the same time. You can be kind and still advocate for yourself. You can protect your peace without being loud.

I’m still learning, but this experience taught me a lot. I hope sharing it helps someone else feel a little more prepared.
