ᰔ Hi girlies! Paid Opportunities You Can’t Miss 💞
The newsletter for the girlies with college and career advice!

ᰔ ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ Hi girlies! We’re back! 💕
First off, I want to apologize for missing the last newsletter. Here it is, fresh and ready for you. Since founding Girls on Campus two years ago, I have noticed a pattern. From March through August, students are very focused on scholarships and internships. Once September comes and through January and February, the energy shifts toward paid opportunities and programs that strengthen resumes. I always try to adapt to both seasons, while still prioritizing what most of you are looking for. This is also a community space, so if you have suggestions, requests, or things you would love to see featured, please do not be shy. Share them in the comments below. 🌸
This week I wanted to talk about communication because this is something I literally realized just yesterday. The way professionals communicate is so different from how students usually do. And why am I telling you this? Because the people reviewing your cover letters, resumes, and applications for jobs or internships are professionals. Think of it like a baby trying to speak to an adult. The adult might understand, but it is not always clear or effective. In the same way, when you apply for opportunities, it is important to recognize how professionals communicate so you can present yourself more effectively and stand out.

Are You Speaking Their Language?
Most of us grew up writing essays where the goal was to show our process: explain every step, then wrap it up with a conclusion. But in the professional world, that order doesn’t always work. Recruiters and hiring managers don’t have time to follow every step — they want the result first, the “how” only if it matters.
That’s when I realized: applications aren’t just about what you’ve done, they’re about how clearly you communicate your value. You’re not just submitting an application — you’re shaping the story someone remembers about you.
One shift that changed everything for me was flipping the order. Instead of saying:
“I researched five strategies, tested them, and the results showed 20% growth.”
I’d lead with the impact:“Increased engagement by 20% through tested strategies.”
When you state your results upfront, you instantly sound sharper and more confident — and that’s the language professionals are listening for.
Another game-changer is understanding KPIs. In school, grades are the measure of success. In jobs and internships, it’s growth, retention, efficiency, and savings. When I started asking in interviews, “What are the KPIs for this role?”, I wasn’t just showing curiosity — I was showing I understood how the team measures success. That shift positioned me as someone who thought like a contributor, not just a candidate.
And finally, don’t waste the first line of your cover letter. That opening is prime real estate. Instead of, “I am writing to apply for the X internship,” I learned to use a headline that makes me memorable:
“As a student who grew engagement by 200% through campus campaigns, I’m excited to bring my results-driven approach to [Company].”
Because at the end of the day, you’re not just applying. You’re giving someone a reason to remember you.
So next time you’re drafting a resume bullet or a cover letter, ask yourself: Am I speaking their language? Am I making my value clear right away?
The more you learn to translate your experiences into results and stories professionals care about, the more doors open.
