Can a passion projects be a side hustle?⊹♡🧸ྀི♡‧₊˚
If you're a high school student planning for college applications, passion projects can absolutely become a side hustle! For example, the founder of Project Connect Forum—a platform that helps students find extracurriculars—is a high school senior. While it started as a passion project, she now sells digital products at a low price.
Another example is Girls on Campus. While we didn’t create GOC specifically for college applications (since I was already a college junior when I started it), we do offer scholarship lists, digital paid resources, and paid promotions to sustain the platform.
I highly recommend starting a passion project, and making it a nonprofit can be a great option. However, keep in mind that running a project comes with costs—building a website, buying a domain, and creating content using tools like Canva or Adobe all require money. For Girls on Campus, setting up the website, purchasing the domain, and registering as a business cost me around $500 usd. Creating a for-profit model can be a smart way to sustain your project and keep it going! Being for-profit doesn’t mean the mission changes..in fact.. it puts us on track to offer even more scholarships in the future!
But how do you start a passion project?
1️⃣ Find the scale you want to work at – Do you want it to be local, national, or global? Remember, choosing a larger scale doesn’t mean skipping local—you’re just adding more layers, and each level gets harder. If you choose to go global, that means you also have to make an impact locally and nationally as well.
2️⃣ Define your target audience – Be as specific as possible! Who do you want to use the platform or benefit from it? You need to meet the needs of each level of your audience.
3️⃣ Figure out how people will find out about your project – Will you use social media, in-person events, partnerships?
4️⃣ Know where your audience is most active – Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok? For Girls on Campus, we focus a lot on Instagram and LinkedIn, but for our SAT prep page, we prioritize TikTok because that’s where our audience is most engaged.
The first step? Build an audience.
No audience = no product. A business or nonprofit can’t exist without people who care about it. Start posting! At first, you might not get much engagement, and that's completely normal. You're welcome to save around $20 to promote posts through ads on Facebook and Instagram, but it’s not required.
💡 You don’t need a website right away. I built the Girls on Campus website a year after our Instagram grew. Everything started on Instagram—I made a post on LinkedIn to drive traffic there, but focusing on one platform at a time made everything easier.
💡 Bring people in BUT NOT TOO MANY. You don’t need to hire a big team. At first, it was just me and my sister working on it together. You don’t need 10 or 100 volunteers—just willingness and consistency.
💡 Make short-form content a priority. Many people focus only on posts, but you should prioritize talking videos and Reels. Short-form content is what grows accounts fastest right now.
Starting a passion project is exciting, but thinking through these steps can help it grow and last long-term!
If starting something feels too early for you, no worries! We have some opportunities you can apply for! ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ

✈️ How I Traveled for Free to Meet Top Companies (and You Can Too!)
One of my favorite flights was to Orlando, Florida, for a visit to KPMG’s Lakehouse—a trip completely covered by the firm. KPMG took care of my flight, transportation to the airport, and even food while traveling.
At the Lakehouse, I met interns and employees from all over, stayed at a company-covered hotel, and built connections with recruiters. Later, this led to an internship offer.
I had a similar experience with Deloitte, and when I transitioned into finance, my Summer 2024 internship included a fully funded trip to NYC. This time, I even got to explore the city while everything was paid for.
Where These Opportunities Happen
Most companies host these events in cities where they have major offices:
Business & Finance – NYC, Boston, Chicago, Charlotte
Biotech & Healthcare – Boston, San Diego, San Francisco
Tech & Engineering – San Francisco, Seattle, Austin, NYC
Consulting & Law – NYC, Washington D.C., Chicago
Aviation & Aerospace – Houston, Denver, Los Angeles
How to Find These Opportunities
If you want to land an opportunity like this, here’s where to start:
Search these keywords online and on LinkedIn:
“Two-Day Immersion Program [Industry]”
“[Industry] Leadership Summit + All Expenses Paid”
“Diversity [Industry] Early Insights”
Check company career pages for leadership programs, student conferences, and networking events.
Use LinkedIn and Handshake to find free company-sponsored events.
Reach out to recruiters by sending a message like:
“Hi [Recruiter’s Name], I’m a [Your Major] student interested in [Industry]. Are there any fully funded programs where students can visit [Company HQ] and network?”
Why This Matters
These opportunities are out there, and they’re not just for a select few. Many companies pay for students to visit and meet them because they want to invest in future talent. These events can lead to internships, mentorship, and even job offers down the road.
