ᰔ Hi girlies! Summer Check-In + Free Travel Opportunities You Can’t Miss ✈️💞

The newsletter for the girlies with college and career advice!

ᰔ ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ Hi girlies!

Lately I’ve been thinking about how underrated these next few months are. Summer isn’t just for rest—it can also be a reset. There are fully funded programs happening across the U.S. that will cover your travel, hotel, and food just to learn, network, and grow. Most students never hear about them in time.

That’s why I’m starting to share more free travel opportunities—whether it’s flying out for a conference, a grad school preview weekend, or pitching your idea at a national summit. If you're even a little curious, this is your reminder to explore them.

You don’t have to do everything. But doing something—applying to one program or sending one email—can really shift your path.

I also want to make sure I'm sharing the right kind of opportunities for you. So tell me below—are you in high school or college? What would actually help you this summer?

Advice Column 💌

You’re Not Just Applying. You’re Being Remembered

Most students treat applications like checklists. You list your GPA, your leadership roles, your activities — then hit submit. But if you’ve ever stared at a blank screen trying to write your personal statement, you already know it’s deeper than that. You’re not just filling out a form. You’re telling someone who you are and hoping they remember you for more than just your stats.

What changed everything for me was realizing that applying for anything — a scholarship, internship, fellowship, or college — is a form of storytelling. And storytelling, at its core, is psychology. It’s not about pretending or performing. It’s about understanding how people make decisions, how they process information, and how they remember people. That’s where marketing psychology comes in.

One theory that helped me is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Most people talk about their achievements from a place of survival — their test scores, titles, or responsibilities. But that’s not always what makes someone compelling. Instead, try tapping into your values.
→ Show how you’ve built security after instability
→ Share the moments where you led, belonged, or made others feel seen
→ Talk about your long-term goals and why they matter

When you shift from “I did this” to “this is what this meant to me,” your story becomes personal — and that’s what sticks with people.

Another theory that made a big difference is Construal Level Theory (CLT). This one’s about distance. The people reading your application are often far removed from your world — they might be older, from a different background, or reading 200 apps a day. The farther someone feels from you, the more general their impression will be. So it’s your job to close that gap.
→ Start by finding shared ground: values, missions, or goals
→ Mix your “why” with what you actually did (metrics, tools, actions)
→ If you’re applying virtually, add more detail than you think you need

The closer you bring them into your world, the easier it is for them to connect with your story.

Lastly, I always keep The Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) in mind. This theory says people process messages in two ways: a quick skim or a deep read. The truth is, most reviewers don’t read every word — they scroll, skim, then stop when something feels worth their time. That’s why you want to design your content to work both ways.
→ For quick readers: use a clean layout, confident tone, and strong headlines
→ For deep readers: explain your impact, connect to the org’s mission, and show growth

You’re not just a student hoping for a shot. You’re someone who’s done the work. You just need to make that work easy to understand — and impossible to ignore.

So if you’re working on an app this week, or thinking about your next opportunity, try this. Instead of asking “What do they want to hear?” ask “What do I want them to remember?” Then tell your story in a way that makes that clear.

You don’t have to do everything perfectly. But the more you understand how people think, the more power you have to shape the way you’re seen — and chosen.
