ᰔ ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ Hi girlies!

NYC has been amazing lately! 💌

It’s pretty easy to fall in love with this city—the energy, the people, the coffee (which I’ve been trying way too much of lately ☕). If you’re based in NYC or have visited, drop your go-to coffee spots in the comments!

Hey! My name is Karla, and I’m the founder of Girls on Campus, a platform dedicated to helping students (especially first-gen, BIPOC, and low-income students) navigate college, careers, and everything in between.

I’m also a first-gen Latina who graduated college in May 2025. I didn’t attend a top 10 or big-name university, and I didn’t have any connections in corporate or business. Everything I’ve built—internships, jobs, and community—came from figuring it out step by step, often without guidance.

I started my 9–5 right after graduation, but it actually began with an internship that turned into a return offer. Last year, I struggled a lot with imposter syndrome, constantly comparing myself to others, and feeling like I didn’t belong. I don’t want others to feel that way too, so I created an Advice Column to help.

It includes:

  • How to stand out during your internship

  • What to do each week to increase your chances of a return offer

  • Why checking your university’s hiring portal still matters

  • How to ask for feedback and maintain relationships

🎓 For high school students

You are not behind. This is the perfect time to explore your interests, apply for scholarships, build your resume, or join pre-college programs. Start small, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people. That’s exactly how I started too.

If you want the column or need help with resumes, cover letters, or just where to begin, feel free to DM me. I’m always happy to share what helped me.

Advice Column 💌

From intern to offer: how to make the most of your experience even if you feel like you’re figuring it all out as you go

If you’re just wrapping up a summer internship (or gearing up to start one), here’s your reminder that what you do in the final stretch matters just as much as how you began. A return offer isn’t only about what you’ve done. It’s about how you show growth, ask for feedback, and follow up.

I know this because I lived it. When I started my internship, I felt like I was behind before I even began. I didn’t have a family friend in the industry. I didn’t go to a big-name university. I was a first-gen Latina just trying to keep up. Everyone else seemed to know how to navigate the space — what to say in meetings, when to speak up, even how to format a follow-up email. I remember wondering if I even belonged.

But what helped me get a return offer wasn’t a perfect resume or knowing the right buzzwords. It was the small things I did consistently. I checked in with my manager every Friday with a short recap of what I’d worked on and one question for feedback. I made a spreadsheet of every project I touched so I could clearly talk about my impact at the end. And I asked one mentor to do a 15-minute mock evaluation with me a week before my final review. That one conversation changed everything.

What I’ve learned is this:

Confidence isn’t about feeling 100 percent ready. It’s about showing up even when you don’t. If you feel imposter syndrome, it’s not a flaw. It’s a signal. You feel that way because you’re stretching into something new. You’re not out of place. You’re out of your comfort zone. And that’s exactly where growth happens.

Tip to try this week:

Check your university’s hiring portal. Even if it looks outdated, many recruiters still post exclusive listings there before they go live on LinkedIn or Handshake. I applied to two roles through mine that weren’t listed anywhere else and one led to my first offer.

🎓 For high school students:

You don’t have to wait until college to start building your path. In fact, some of the strongest applicants I know started early — not because they had it all figured out, but because they took initiative.

Here’s how you can start:

• Join a local or virtual volunteer org and try out different roles

• Ask your school counselor for last year’s senior awards list — there are often local scholarships you won’t find online

• Apply to free summer or mentorship programs designed for high schoolers, especially first-gen students

• Start a simple resume or activity tracker in Google Docs — you’ll thank yourself later

It’s easy to feel like you have to wait until “later” to take big steps. But you’re not too early. And your efforts — no matter how small they feel — are already making you stand out.
