Advice Column 💌

A few days ago, I got offered a remote internship I applied for over a month ago. Honestly? I forgot I even applied.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to hear back — no follow-up email, no portal status update — just vibes. But then boom, a congratulatory email landed in my inbox and reminded me of something important:

🎯 You don’t always need to be “perfect” to be chosen. You just need to show up, apply, and be real.

Apply to Student-Friendly Orgs

So many organizations love the idea of “student voices,” but don’t offer actual roles or give students real responsibility. That’s why I helped build this spreadsheet: to spotlight student-led, youth-friendly, and nonprofit orgs that actually want you to be involved.

These are orgs that understand what it’s like to be balancing school, finals, a job, and still trying to make a difference. Many of them accept international students, first-gen applicants, and don’t ask for long resumes or fancy cover letters. Some are as simple as: name, why you’re interested, and a link to your socials.

Your Story Matters More Than Your Experience

One of my friends just got accepted to an internship with a mental health org even though she didn’t have formal experience. What stood out? Her personal story. She talked about her experiences in school, what she’d like to learn, and how she hoped to support others through her writing and creativity.

So if you’re hesitating to apply because you’ve “never done something like this before,” apply anyway. You don’t need to have the experience — you need to have the heart.

Take Imperfect Action

The biggest advice I can give is: don’t wait to feel ready. Apply even if you’re nervous. Say yes even if you’re not 100% sure. So many of us (especially first-gen, BIPOC, and low-income students) feel like we need to have everything figured out to “deserve” an opportunity. You don’t. You’re already worthy.

Write one or two lines about why the org inspires you. Hit submit. That’s it.
