ᰔ ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ Hi girlies!

Another Wednesday with you, and I have a quick update—we are verified!! Omgosh, this has been such a rollercoaster! If you ever doubt yourself, take me as an example that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

A little background on me: I literally started Girls on Campus in my junior year of college with no money, $5K in tuition debt, and a job at Panda Express (where every dollar I earned went straight to my tuition). I had no marketing experience, just social media knowledge—but I taught myself everything through free marketing courses, YouTube videos, and a whole lot of trial and error!

Now, Girls on Campus has technically become my part-time job (aka my side hustle!), and through it, I’m able to pay off some of my tuition. It’s crazy to think that something I started with zero funding is now helping me financially while also supporting so many of you!

This week, I want to highlight side hustles! Whether you're looking to start one or grow yours, I’ll be sharing insights, resources, and real stories from our community. Because trust me, that small idea you have? It can turn into something BIG.

A Bankrate study found that over 40% of Gen Z and millennials have side hustles, with women often leveraging social media, freelancing, and e-commerce to generate income. Whether it’s tutoring, reselling clothes, or starting a personal brand, these hustles aren’t just about making extra cash—they’re about building confidence, skills, and future opportunities.

In a world where financial stability and career flexibility are more important than ever, side hustles empower young women to take control of their futures. For many, what starts as a small project can grow into a full-time business—proof that ambition and resourcefulness can create endless possibilities.

Advice column

Since we’re on the topic of side hustles, jobs, and growing in our careers, I wanted to bring up something so important—owning your work and making sure you get the credit you deserve.

The other day, I was talking to a friend who works in social media for a small business. She mentioned how she felt her supervisor was taking credit for her work and how a lot of assignments were being pushed onto her. It’s frustrating, right? When you’re putting in the effort, coming up with ideas, and handling major tasks, but someone else gets the recognition—or worse, your workload keeps growing without acknowledgment.

Here’s how she handled it—and some advice if you’re in the same situation:

1️⃣ Speak Up (But Keep It Professional)

Instead of assuming the worst, she decided to talk to her boss (who was above the supervisor). She didn’t blame anyone outright, but she made it clear how she felt—saying something like:

“I’ve been handling a lot of responsibilities lately, and I want to make sure my contributions are recognized. I love what I do, but I also want to ensure my work is being acknowledged.”

This way, she expressed her concerns without pointing fingers—just stating the facts.

2️⃣ Keep Track of Your Work

If you’re in a job or internship (or even running a side hustle with clients), document your contributions. Keep track of:
The projects you’ve worked on
Any big ideas you came up with
Performance metrics or results you’ve helped achieve

That way, if someone tries to claim your work, you have receipts! 💅

3️⃣ Be Clear About Your Role

If you feel like your responsibilities are growing without acknowledgment or extra pay, it’s okay to ask:

  • “I’ve been handling a lot of additional tasks—should we revisit my role and responsibilities?”

  • “I’d love to discuss growth opportunities based on the contributions I’ve made.”

Sometimes, leadership doesn’t realize how much is being put on you until you bring it up.

3️⃣ Know When to Step Away

Some things you can’t control—and honestly, the best thing to do is to walk away when something is no longer serving you.

For example, I keep seeing pages copying our posts—same fonts, similar structures, even word-for-word captions. And while I can’t blame anyone (and I respect inspiration), I also know when to protect my work. Instead of stressing, I just block them or remove them as followers—because at the end of the day, no one can truly copy what makes YOU unique.

But what does “walking away” look like in school or a job?

When It’s School:

  • If you're in a group project where you're doing all the work while others slack off, talk to your teacher/professor about assigning tasks individually or setting clearer expectations.

  • If you feel like your ideas are constantly being ignored or taken credit for, consider working with people who value you instead. Sometimes, switching partners or groups (if possible) is the best move.

  • If you're feeling overwhelmed and undervalued, prioritize your well-being. Not every battle is worth fighting—sometimes, stepping back and focusing on your own growth is the smarter choice.

💼 When It’s a Job:

  • If you’re constantly taking on extra tasks without recognition or compensation, it’s okay to ask:
👉 “I’ve been handling a lot of additional responsibilities. Can we revisit my role and expectations?”

  • If your boss or coworkers take credit for your work and nothing changes after speaking up, it might be time to look for a new role where you’re respected.

  • If your workplace feels draining, toxic, or unrewarding, start building your exit plan—whether that means networking, applying elsewhere, or even starting your own thing.

At the end of the day, your energy and self-respect are worth more than any job, project, or opportunity that doesn’t value you.
