Internview hack!

If you’re a student and you just got an email saying you’ve been invited to an interview—congratulations! That’s the first step. Having recently transitioned from being an interviewee to an interviewer, I’ve noticed a few things that really make candidates stand out, and I want to share some tips with you.

First, make sure your camera setup is good—try to sit in front of a blank wall if possible. I found that when students had busy backgrounds, it was distracting, and I ended up focusing on their surroundings instead of them. Also, eliminate any distractions. In one interview, a student kept glancing to the side, and it made me wonder if I had said something wrong or if they weren’t paying attention. Staying engaged is key! Speaking of engagement, a simple smile goes a long way. It brightens up the conversation and makes the interaction more pleasant for both sides. If your interviewer has their camera on, it’s also important that you turn yours on. Unless you have technical issues (which you should communicate beforehand), keeping your camera off can seem disengaged and unprofessional.

Another tip—always have at least one or two questions prepared for the end of the interview. Something as simple as "Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities?" or "What’s the time commitment for this role?" can make you seem more interested and proactive. However, do not ask overly basic questions that were already covered in the job posting—like "What is this position about?" That’s something you should already know before applying, and asking it can make it seem like you didn’t do your research. Also, responding to emails and booking your interview quickly is a small but impressive detail. Recruiters get notifications when candidates reply, and timely responses show that you’re serious about the opportunity. If, at the end of the interview, they mention other similar positions, express interest! Sometimes companies won’t hire you for the role you applied for, but if they see your enthusiasm, they might consider you for another. Finally, always send a follow-up email within a day or two after your interview. It doesn’t have to be overly formal—just a simple thank-you message that reinforces your interest in the role.

And most importantly—remember, the interview is about you, not the interviewer. Don’t take it too seriously to the point of stressing yourself out. Own the spotlight, be yourself, and make them see why you’re the right fit!
