Advice column: Is it worth it to keep applying for scholarships or other opportunities?
I keep seeing many students on LinkedIn saying, "This week I applied to 100 internships!" There are indeed a ton of internships and positions available, and while they all might seem like good opportunities and a great way to open doors, it’s unrealistic to apply to every single one. First, you don’t have the time or energy to give each application the attention it deserves. And second, applying to so many increases the chance that your applications become rushed, which lowers your chances of actually being accepted.
That’s why I encourage you to be kind to yourself and focus on the opportunities that truly excite you and align with your goals. You don’t have to apply to everything—you’re not expected to do it all. It’s okay if you miss a few, and it’s more important to give your best effort to the ones that really matter to you.
Here’s how to prioritize specific opportunities:
First, consider the impact each opportunity will have on you and your goals. For example, think about whether the time and effort required are worth the reward. If you come across a $500 scholarship, ask yourself: is it worth spending three hours on this application? Sometimes, for a smaller reward, it might make more sense to focus on other opportunities. But if you find a scholarship worth $5,000, that’s likely worth prioritizing—even if it takes a few hours to complete—because the potential impact on your financial situation is much greater.
In short, opportunities with bigger rewards (financially, skill-building, or career-wise) are generally worth more of your time and effort than smaller ones. This way, you’ll use your time more effectively on opportunities that make the biggest difference.
You don’t have to apply to everything—you’re not expected to do it all. It’s okay if you miss a few, and it’s more important to give your best effort to the ones that really matter to you. Take it one step at a time, and remember, it’s about putting your heart into the right opportunities, not trying to apply to as many as possible. You’ve got this!
